Our Story

From a college tour at the TRUMPF Smart Factory to a wedding in Mérida, here is a little more of our story.

How we met

Over eight years ago, Felix gave Paula and her Engineering class a tour of the TRUMPF Smart Factory. A few days later, Paula messaged Felix on Facebook. Wanting to appear professional, Felix asked if she had any additional questions from her visit. Paula, not wanting to come off too strong, had to make up a question about TRUMPF. After that, they kept texting almost daily until they met in person again at Lollapalooza in Chicago.

How we got engaged

On October 13, 2025, Felix proposed at the very spot where we shared our first kiss during Lollapalooza 2018. It was the perfect full-circle moment in the city where so much of our story began.

Our life today

Today, we live (mostly) in the beautiful city of Chicago, where we enjoy sailing in the summer, trying all sorts of new restaurants, and going for walks around the city even in the winter. We are proud parents of the cutest trilingual cats, Luchs and Balam, who are also the most spoiled cats in the world.

Travel to Mérida

Everything you need to know to plan your trip to Mérida, book accommodations, and arrange transportation.

Flights

For the easiest arrival, fly into either Mérida (MID) or Cancún (CUN). Mérida offers nonstop options from Mexico City with Aeroméxico, Viva and Volaris, Dallas/Fort Worth with American Airlines, and Houston with United Airlines. Cancún offers a wider choice of international flights and is served by many major U.S. airlines. From Europe, Edelweiss flies nonstop from Zurich, while nonstop Frankfurt service is operated by Discover Airlines. Cancún Airport is about a 2.5–3 hour drive from Mérida. The toll road is straightforward, but bring Mexican pesos in cash for the toll booths.

We selected two boutique hotels in central Mérida, each with its own character. Use booking code Paula&Felix when booking to request the special rate.

Transportation

From Cancún, you can continue to Mérida by rental car, private transfer, bus or Tren Maya. In our experience, Avis has been the best car-rental partner in Mexico because its pricing has been more transparent and we have not been surprised by additional insurance charges at pickup, unlike with some other major rental companies. Always confirm the final price and included coverage before pickup. On the wedding day, buses will be provided to and from the venue; exact pickup times and locations will be shared closer to the wedding.

Things to Do

Mérida is known for its colorful colonial architecture, warm plazas, Yucatán history, incredible food and easy day trips. Walk through the historic center and Paseo de Montejo, try local restaurants, tacos and cafés, visit nearby Maya sites or the beach, and cool off in a cenote — natural freshwater pools where you can swim, relax and spend a beautiful afternoon.
